Frequently Asked Questions About Coin Capsules & Flips
Should I buy the exact millimeter size or 1 mm larger for coin capsules?
For hard acrylic direct-fit capsules (such as Lighthouse Ultra or Air-Tite Direct Fit), round the coin's official diameter up to the nearest 0,5 mm or 1,0 mm so the planchet does not jam inside the rim. For inert polyethylene foam ring capsules, order the exact integer millimeter size (or 0,5 mm smaller) because the soft foam ring gently compresses around the coin edge for a zero-rattle fit.
Why does my 1 oz Canadian Silver Maple Leaf not close in a standard 38 mm capsule?
While US Morgan Dollars (38,10 mm diameter, 2,40 mm thick) and 1 oz Canadian Silver Maple Leafs (38,00 mm diameter, 3,29 mm thick) share nearly the same diameter, the Maple Leaf is almost 0,90 mm thicker. Standard flat capsules have an internal depth of ~2,50 mm, meaning thick bullion coins require a deep-chamber (Model I / H or XL) capsule with at least 3,17 mm to 3,30 mm of vertical clearance.
How do I choose the right 2x2 cardboard Mylar flip window size?
A 2x2 cardboard flip folds around both faces and the vertical edge of the coin. Always select a Mylar window diameter that is at least 2,5 mm to 4,5 mm wider than your coin's diameter (adding extra margin for coins thicker than 2,5 mm) so the Mylar film does not tear and the coin edge remains clearly visible.
How do you measure polygonal or square coins for round capsules?
Multi-sided coins such as the British 7-sided 50 Pence (27,30 mm) or 12-sided 1 Pound (23,43 mm) must be measured across their widest vertex-to-vertex span. For square or diamond-shaped coins (such as Dutch square 5-cent pieces or Asian cash coins), multiply the flat side width by 1,414 (√2) to determine the diagonal corner-to-corner diameter required for a circular capsule.
