Frequently Asked Questions About Weighing Coins & Rolls

View Full Collector FAQ

How much does a full roll of US Quarters or Dimes weigh?

A standard $10 bank roll of 40 modern clad US Quarters weighs 226,80 grams (exactly 8,00 avoirdupois ounces) excluding the paper wrapper, or approximately 228,30 grams with the paper wrapper. A $5 bank roll of 50 US Dimes weighs exactly half as much at 113,40 grams (4,00 ounces) net.

Why do some penny rolls weigh 125 grams while others weigh 155,5 grams?

In 1982, the United States Mint changed the composition of the 1 Cent Lincoln Penny from 95% copper bronze (3,11 g per coin) to copper-plated zinc (2,50 g per coin). A 50-coin roll of post-1982 zinc pennies weighs 125,00 g, whereas a full roll of pre-1982 copper pennies weighs 155,50 g. Mixed rolls fall between 126 g and 154 g depending on the copper-to-zinc ratio.

Can I weigh a mixed coin jar without sorting the denominations first?

For 100% accuracy, coins should be sorted by denomination before weighing because low-value bronze coins and high-value bi-metallic coins have different mass-to-value ratios. Once sorted into single-denomination piles, use the Tare function on your kitchen scale (or enter all piles at once in our Multi-Denomination Batch Ledger) to calculate the exact piece count and bank roll breakdown in seconds.

How can roll hunters spot silver coins inside sealed bank rolls by weight?

Pre-1965 US 90% silver quarters (6,25 g), dimes (2,50 g), and half dollars (12,50 g) are heavier than modern cupronickel clad coins. If a sealed bank roll of quarters weighs significantly more than 228,5 grams (including the paper wrapper), it may contain one or more 90% silver coins or a heavier foreign coin.
