Spanning vast steppes, the Altai mountains, and the Gobi Desert between Russia and China with its capital at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia traces its coinage to 13th-century silver dirhams and khans' issues of the Mongol Empire. Introduced on December 9, 1925 by the Bank of Mongolia, the Mongolian tögrög (MNT)—meaning round object—and möngö (meaning silver) encompasses 1925 silver issues, holed 1959 aluminium möngö coins, the Soyombo symbol, and ultra-high-relief wildlife art coins.
