Where the Julian Alps, the Karst plateau, the Pannonian plain, and the Adriatic coast converge around its green river capital of Ljubljana, Slovenia introduced its independent Slovenian tolar (SIT) and stotin coinage in 1991–1992 featuring iconic native animals including the Lipizzaner stallion, olm (proteus), barn swallow, and brown bear. On January 1, 2007, Slovenia became the first 2004 EU enlargement nation to adopt the Euro (EUR), striking coins with Mount Triglav, the Prince's Stone, and poet France Prešeren.
