Encompassing the volcanic islands of Upolu and Savai'i along with eight smaller islets in the heart of Polynesia and governed from Apia, the Independent State of Samoa (known as Western Samoa until 1997) replaced the pound in 1967 with the decimal Samoan tālā (WST) and sene—Polynesian transliterations of dollar and cent. Redesigned in 2011 on round and scalloped planchets, Samoan coins depict the Fautasi longboat race, kava bowl, breadfruit, coconut palm, and endemic tooth-billed pigeon (Manumea).
